She Stoops to Conquer

Written by Oliver Goldsmith
Directed by Richard Beecham
Performed in The Sainsbury Theatre

Marlow is on his way to meet his new bride, accompanied by his friend Hastings. But when the two young gallants are tricked into mistaking a country house for an inn, mayhem ensues. First performed in 1773, Oliver Goldsmith’s farcical comedy of manners boasts an array of brilliantly delightful characters.

An Anglo-Irish essayist, poet, and dramatist, Goldsmith is best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield, his series of essays The Citizen of the World and his play She Stoops to Conquer.
