LAMDA Examinations: Syllabus Update
Updates on our new Shakespeare Examinations, new Diploma in Acting (LDA), Diploma in Communication, Speech and Drama Education (LSDE) and our Graded Qualifications.
LAMDA Shakespeare Examinations
LAMDA Shakespeare Examinations are recognised by Ofqual (the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation in England). They are not graded examinations and instead there is one examination at Level 1, one at Level 2 and one at Level 3.
Learners will develop basic skills in performing a Shakespearean text. They will perform from memory one set speech from a specified choice of plays by William Shakespeare. These speeches are published within the syllabus so there is no requirement to purchase an Anthology. Learners will apply their knowledge, understanding and skills to produce a thoughtful interpretation, based on creative engagement with the material and careful preparation.
Learners will perform from memory two own choice scenes, each from a different play by William Shakespeare – one from List A and one from List B (these lists are provided in the syllabus). Each performance will be audible and intelligible, with vocal expression through which mood and meaning are communicated. Learners will demonstrate a solid understanding of Shakespeare’s language, leading to an imaginative interpretation in which there is application of appropriate technical skills.
Learners will develop a wide range of skills in performing a Shakespearean text. They will perform from memory two own choice scenes, each from a different play by William Shakespeare – one from List A and one from List B (these lists will be published in the syllabus). Learners are also required to perform a sonnet written by Shakespeare. They will integrate their knowledge and skills to demonstrate a mature understanding of the text and language. The Learner will take ownership and demonstrate a personal interpretation of the text. Presentation will be grounded in thorough and relevant preparation.
Teacher support material is now available on our website and is aimed to support Teachers in understanding the requirements for each of these examinations.
Knowledge Matters: Shakespeare, which will offer further support to Teachers preparing Learners for the Shakespeare Examinations, is scheduled for publication in December 2017.
The LAMDA Diploma in Acting (LDA)
Development is still underway on our LDA. This is our new Level 5 Acting Diploma, which will be a perfect next step for Learners completing Grade 8 in any LAMDA examination in any discipline.
The LDA will be made up of three units – two units will be practical and will focus on Learners' interpretation and technique during performance and research; and the other unit will be portfolio based.
Our aim is to have this Diploma ready for first teaching from September 2018 with first examining from January 2019.
The LAMDA Diploma in Communication, Speech and Drama Education (LSDE)
We are looking to update our teaching qualification, LSDE, in 2018 so it is more relevant to prospective LAMDA Teachers and any Teacher working in a speech, communication or drama education setting.
You are currently not required to hold a teaching qualification to teach LAMDA, however, we recommend our LSDE qualification be completed, as this offers Teachers a deeper understanding of learning styles, which in turn will benefit their Learners.
LAMDA Graded Qualifications
Our current Communication, Performance, Group and Introductory qualifications will not be reviewed until 2019. If new syllabi and anthologies are required after our review, these will be released in September 2019 prior to the examination start date.
Our current Communication, Performance, Group and Introductory syllabi (dated 2014) are available to download for free from our website and purchase from our online shop. Our Verse and Prose Anthology (volume 18) and Acting Anthology (volume 3) are still in date and will be until August 2019.
Our qualifications are always designed with our customers in mind, and we hope that you will be as excited as we are by these new offerings. If you have any questions about the new qualifications or would like to offer your comments/feedback on the above information, please email us at: email@example.com.
