Rt Hon. Shaun Woodward is Appointed Next LAMDA Chairman

Shaun is former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and was previously the Minister for Creative Industries at the DCMS. He was first elected to Parliament in 1997 and served four terms before standing down in 2015. Shaun has been a Trustee of LAMDA and our Vice-Chairman since 2013, leading Act Now! – the most ambitious and successful fundraising campaign in LAMDA history – to raise the finances to fund our new £28.2 million centre for drama training, due for completion this April. He was also recently elected Chair of our affiliate charity organisation in the United States, the American Friends of LAMDA, Inc.

Shaun has had a long association with the arts in the UK and US. Studying English at Cambridge, he began his career in television journalism. He was a producer and documentary filmmaker for the BBC (Newsnight and Panorama) and editor of That’s Life! He served on the Board of English National Opera and was the first Chair of the ENO’s Redevelopment Campaign; he is now on the Board of the Hamptons International Film Festival and has been its Honorary Chair. He has been Deputy Chair of ChildLine and is also currently Chair of the Board of the Human Dignity Trust.

Commenting on his appointment as LAMDA Chairman, Shaun said: “It is an enormous privilege to be elected to succeed Luke Rittner, who has been an outstanding Chairman, having presided over a hugely successful time in LAMDA’s long history. Over the last four years I have come to know the organisation and its staff well, especially through the Act Now! Campaign which has now ensured LAMDA can secure its future at the heart of the creative industries. With challenging plans ahead, we must continue to attract the best students from around the world. I am very much looking forward to ensuring LAMDA builds on its great reputation for developing outstanding talent for the stage, film and TV, and continues to offer the best drama training to students from every background.”
