Written by John Logan
Directed by Paspawisa Jewpattanagul
Performed in The Carne Studio Theatre
"One day, the black will swallow the red."
Abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko tries to finish a series of paintings while figuring his way out of the maze of art and life.
John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play reveals the story behind the creation of his infamous lucrative commission, the Seagram Murals, some of which can be seen at London's Tate Modern today. The play transports us back to the artist's New York Studio in 1958, to the moment when many of the canvases are still blank - before they become Red. Through the challenging moments between Rothko and his young new studio assistant Ken, we explore the relationships between the mentor and assistant, art and artist, artwork and viewer, and ultimately between a searching soul and a relentless changing world.
