Merrily We Roll Along
Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Directed by Caroline Leslie
Performed in The Linbury Studio
Travelling back in time across three decades, Merrily We Roll Along charts the turbulent relationship between three friends. This moving fable about friendship, compromise and the high price of success features some of Sondheim’s most beautiful songs including Not a Day Goes By and Old Friends.
Based on the play by Kaufman and Hart, the musical debuted on Broadway in 1981. The original London production won three Olivier Awards including Best New Musical. In 2013 the Menier Chocolate Factory production transferred to the West End.
Stephen Sondheim made his name as the lyricist for West Side Story and Gypsy before going on to write music and lyrics for many successful Broadway musicals, including Company, Follies, Into the Woods A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He has won eight Tony Awards, five Olivier Awards and the Pulitzer Prize.
