My Children! My Africa!

Written by Athol Fugard
Directed by Debbie Seymour
Performed in The Carne Studio Theatre

Under the auspices of inspirational teacher Mr M, two young students, white Isabel and black Thami, meet across the apartheid divide to take part in a debating competition. Yet as Thami develops his own political consciousness, he is torn between respect for his mentor and an increasing impatience with non-violence and the slow pace of change in his country.

My Children! My Africa! is a stark reminder of the moral complexities that faced those dealing with the tensions and insecurity of apartheid South Africa. Following its premier in Johannesburg in 1989, My Children! My Africa! was performed at the National Theatre in 1990.
