Valparaiso

Written by Don DeLillo
Directed by Theodora Tavener
Performed in The Linbury Studio

'I’m on when no-one’s watching.'

Acute, poetic, and wickedly funny, Valparaiso explores the hyper-reality of fame and the media’s violation of private life. When a young businessman accidently ends up in Valparaiso, Chile on a trip to Valparaiso, Indiana, his seemingly simple mistake turns his life upside down. As the world’s attention turns to him, the mundane details of his existence are granted extraordinary significance – but will this bring him transcendence or tragedy?

Written in 1999 by one of the giants of American fiction, and only ever performed once in the UK, Don DeLillo’s play feels more pertinent than ever to our contemporary experience.
