Anna Matthews

Assistant Professor of Lighting | Head of Lighting
Anna Matthews trained in Technical Theatre at Guildhall in London before building a successful career in theatre lighting. Her professional work included venues such as Greenwich Theatre, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, LSO St Luke’s and the Almeida, together with touring companies working across the UK and Europe including Ockham’s Razor, Red Cape Theatre, Fuel Theatre and Turtle Key Arts.
She later became a Senior Lighting Technician at the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman, where part of her role involved helping to train local technical staff to international standards. That experience developed her passion for helping others understand how theatre is made.
After returning to the UK, Anna worked at Guildhall as a Technical Supervisor. She was part of the team supervising lighting, sound, stage technology and stage management across five venues and took an active role in supporting students through their technical training. During this period she also completed a postgraduate teaching qualification.
Anna joined LAMDA in 2021, bringing together her two central professional interests: creating theatre that can broaden perspectives and provoke thought, and helping young people discover their own passion for theatre and achieve their potential.
