Guide to UK and International Auditions
If you’re based in the UK or outside the US, you’ll follow the same audition process when applying to LAMDA.
The process varies slightly depending on the course you’ve applied for, but every audition is designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your potential, creativity and commitment to training. Below, you’ll find an overview of what to expect, followed by the specific audition requirements for each course.

About the Audition Process
Once your application has been reviewed, we will invite successful applicants to audition.
1. Invitation to audition
Once we’ve reviewed your application, successful applicants will be invited to submit a self-tape audition. We’ll email you with everything you need to know, including your submission deadline, technical guidance and the audition requirements for your chosen course.
We recommend preparing your audition as soon as you submit your application, as invitations may be sent at short notice.
2. Submit your self-tape
All applicants complete a self-tape as the first stage of the audition process.
The material you’ll need to prepare depends on the course you’ve applied for and is outlined below. Please follow the instructions carefully and submit your self-tape by the deadline provided.
We encourage you to prepare your audition independently so we can see your own choices, creativity and interpretation of the material.
3. Recall auditions
If you are successful with your self-tape you will be invited to attend an in-person audition, either in London, or regional venues across the UK. The format varies by course and we’ll contact you with full details, including the date, location and anything you’ll need to prepare in advance.
The UK audition process has three potential stages. You may then be invited to a second in-person workshop audition then potentially a final recall in person.
4. Audition outcome
After each stage of the audition process, we will let you know whether you have been successful in progressing to the next stage. If you’re offered a place, we’ll send you details of how to accept your offer and prepare for joining LAMDA.
Audition Requirements
After we have received and processed your application via UCAS, we will email you to tell you how to upload your self-tape, which is the first-round audition. You will have 14 days from the date you receive the email to send LAMDA a link to your self-tape.
For your self-tape you should perform two contrasting monologues from a play or script of your choice. One monologue should be a maximum of 3 minutes and one monologue a maximum of two minutes, please do not exceed this time. One of your monologues must be from LAMDA’s Classical Monologue List. Your second monologue should be a contemporary speech of your choice.
You can edit the text of your monologue but make sure it makes sense as a stand-alone speech. For example, if you are combining two short pieces to form a longer monologue, make sure that it flows well as a whole. We like to see auditions that you have prepared without anyone else’s help or direction. We want to see your character choices and interpretation of the text.
What happens next?
A member of our admissions team will check that the link and password you provided both work. They will contact you if they find any problems. If everything is fine, they’ll send your video to a member of the audition squad to view. Once that member has reviewed and assessed your tape we will send you the result.
If you are unsuccessful in progressing to the next stage we will delete all links to your self-tape. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide feedback on self-tapes.
The LAMDA UK audition process has three potential stages. If you are successful with your self-tape you will be invited to attend an in-person workshop audition. These workshops will take place in London and regional venues in Newcastle, Manchester and Belfast.
We will tell you more about the workshops/recalls when we send you your results. You will either be invited to a second in-person workshop audition then potentially a final recall in person.
An extra fee will apply for a final recall but there is no additional charge for the workshop audition. You may be eligible for some financial assistance towards your final recall.
Application notification and waitlisting
After the recall audition, it will take around two to three weeks to get your result. We’ll let you know if:
- You have been waitlisted for a place on a course
- You’re successful and we’d like to offer you a place
- You’ve not been successful this time

We suggest you perform with music accompaniment where possible, as it provides a better reflection of your vocal and interpretative abilities. If live accompaniment is not available, you may use a backing track. Only if neither option is accessible should you perform unaccompanied. When recording please ensure that your voice can be heard above the accompaniment.
You should also record a video introduction personal statement lasting 3 minutes maximum where you can:
- Tell us a bit about yourself
- Discuss your relationship and experience with Musical Theatre
- Describe why you are interested in the course/why you want to perform Musical Theatre.

If everything is fine, they’ll send your video to a member of the audition squad to view. Once that member has reviewed and assessed your tape we will send you the result.
Depending on your level of dance experience, you may be asked to submit a follow-up self-tape demonstrating your dance ability. Recalls for the Musical Theatre course are held in person in London. To avoid unnecessary travel at your own expense, we assess applicants’ basic dance ability in advance before confirming a recall invitation.
If you are unsuccessful in progressing to the next stage we will delete all links to your self-tape. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide feedback on self-tapes.
If you are successful and recalled we may need access your self-tape later. We will tell you more about this when we send you your results.
We will let you know if we would like to see you for a final recall. This will take place in-person. An extra fee will apply. If you are offered a recall, we’ll send you the date of the recall audition, and all the details about what to expect, about two to three weeks in advance.
