About the show
It's 1972. An era of possibility and polyester and pubic hair. While Ziggy Stardust is on Top of the Pops, Penny is writing an essay on Lady Chatterley's Lover, Christine is watching Deep Throat and Brian is confused.
Devised by The Wardrobe Ensemble, 1972: The Future of Sex incorporates the company's trademark theatricality, irreverent humour and ensemble ingenuity to tell the story of three couples having sex for the first time – and a country on the brink of a sexual awakening.
Seán is a theatre director from Manchester. He was previously Trainee Artistic Director at Sheffield Theatres and Paines Plough in partnership with Arts Council England and Resident Assistant Director at the Donmar Warehouse.
He has worked as an assistant/associate for the National Theatre, Old Vic, English Touring Theatre, Edinburgh International Festival, Manchester International Festival, Rose Theatre Kingston and Park Avenue Armory, New York. He is currently assisting Nicholas Hytner on his inaugural production at The Bridge Theatre and is also a selector for the National Student Drama Festival.
The Wardrobe Ensemble is a Bristol-based group of theatre artists. Their work includes: The Last of the Pelican Daughters (Edinburgh Fringe, 2019); Education, Education, Education (Edinburgh Festival Fringe & UK tour, 2017; Trafalgar Studios, 2019); 1972: The Future of Sex (Shoreditch Town Hall, 2014; UK tour, 2015; Bristol Old Vic, 2019); 33 (Bristol Old Vic & Edinburgh Fringe, 2013; UK tour 2014); and RIOT (Bristol Old Vic, 2011; UK tour 2012; National Theatre, 2013).
The company has made numerous shows for families and early years, including Eliza and the Wild Swans, Edgar and the Land of Lost, Eloise and the Curse of the Golden Whisk and The Forever Machine (all co-productions with the Bike Shed Theatre); Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain (a co-production with Bristol Old Vic); and The Star Seekers (a co-production with The Wardrobe Theatre, Bristol).
