The Building

LAMDA's award-winning £28.2 million redevelopment opened in 2017 in Baron's Court South West London, the former home of The Royal Ballet School.

The LAMDA building is a hive of activity. Students on our courses train 9am - 6pm every weekday, and outside of these times the general public and industry guests enjoy performances, we welcome schools for workshops, and host LAMDA London Public Exams.

Students also benefit from a Library filled with ever-changing new works, plays and thought-provoking critical texts that reflect the curriculum, and have access to online journal directories to assist with their dissertations, research and academic assignments.

You'll notice the affectionately known room 'Hogwarts' in the tour below. Choral singing and music often take place in this grand looking rehearsal room.

LED Volume & Mocap Space

In 2023, LAMDA was awarded a £1.9m grant from the Office for Students to invest in Virtual Production (VP) and Motion Capture (Mocap) technologies. Following the installation of our new LED wall (or 'LED volume') in the Weston Studio in our RIBA Award-winning West Wing, we can now create any environment using computer-generated ‘Unreal’ environments, 2.5D backgrounds or 2D film footage, before the actors have even arrived on set. This allows us to explore our storytelling possibilities, whilst training our technical students in a cutting-edge technology which will make for more sustainable production.

Our Motion Capture Studio is 10x10 meters, has a sprung floor, and a 30 camera Vicon rig to rival some of the best motion capture studios in London.

With this investment, LAMDA becomes one of the first drama schools in the UK to offer training to technicians and creatives in both technologies, where there is a recognised industry-wide skills gap. Furthermore, we will democratise VP by integrating the technology into our Access & Widening Participation offerings and making it available to our alumni and independent filmmakers at an affordable rate.

Theatres

The theatre spaces and cafe bar areas play host to productions throughout the school year. The students and staff also benefit from the cafe/bars outside of class time. Industry guests, friends and family and the general public are regularly invited to watch performances in person or via livestreams.

The Sainsbury Theatre, built in 2017 is a proscenium arch theatre seating 220 with full height fly tower.

The Carne Studio Theatre and Linbury Theatre are black box studio theatres, which provide flexible and accessible performance spaces. They seat 120 and 90 and are both based on the ground floor of the building.

Studios

LAMDA has 16 rehearsal studios available, with the largest being 216 square metres. The studios are state-of-the-art, light, bright spaces with high ceilings. The large studios reflect the exact stage size of the theatre spaces below, making them versatile and useful spaces for our students to rehearse in, and a true reflection of the theatres they will perform in. There are three dance studios with mirrored walls and ballet barres, and 13 of the studios are equipped with sprung vinyl flooring suitable for dance, movement and stage combat.

We have recording and film equipment and an audio studio for voice overs, short films, self-created work and digital showcase scenes.
