LAMDA celebrates alumni productions at Camden Fringe
LAMDA is proud to celebrate the presence of a significant number of exciting productions at this year’s Camden Fringe, created, performed and produced by talented alumni, with support from LAMDA.
Starting on Monday 28 July, the Camden Fringe is one of the UK’s most vibrant platforms for emerging theatre-makers, story tellers and creatives, with over 400 shows confirmed for this year's festival. This year more recent LAMDA graduates are featured, presenting stories that they’ve developed during their time in training.
This year’s productions include Max Allen’s pitch-black FRAT, which examines toxic masculinity against the backdrop of an American college fraternity society. Written when Allen was an MFA student, the play’s first airing was at LAMDA, followed by a sold-out run at the Old Red Lion in Islington, before going to Brighton Fringe, and most recently the Prague Fringe, where it picked up a ‘Pick of The Fringe' award.
Other productions include the hilarious deep dive into modern dating, Boy Crazy, written by and starring Madeleine Bloxam; My Dead: An Immigrant's Story, about a woman’s search for her family history, written by and starring Carolyn Hartvigsen; and an adaptation of Metamorphoses, starring Samuel Ferrer, Dilip Kumar, Natalia May, Grace Alice Murray, Max Pink, and Oliver Winn.
These shows are a powerful testament to the creativity, confidence and collaborative spirit of LAMDA’s alumni, who are utilising skills that they honed during their training, including the devising, refining and performance of original work for a theatre audience.
“We’re thrilled to see so many of our recent graduates showcasing their work at Camden Fringe this year,” said Matt Wilde, Deputy Director of Actor Training and Drama School. “LAMDA fosters and encourages self-created work on many of its courses, from Solo Story Projects to ColLAB Festival to Thesis Presentation and Devised Projects. It’s wonderful to see the incredible skills our students have developed being shared in the wider creative environment.”
Madeleine Bloxam, writer of Boy Crazy said, “Bringing my own work to Camden is honestly thrilling and slightly terrifying. When you’ve written something and you’re the one performing it, there’s just nowhere to hide. But being surrounded by other new voices, many sharing their work for the first time, creates this really generous atmosphere and sense of community. It reminds you that we’re all putting ourselves out there together. Boy Crazy started as a final project for my MA last year, and I never imagined it would grow into what it is now. I definitely have many of my LAMDA classmates and tutors for the encouragement to do so.”
