About the show

Left quad. Right quad. Lunge. A girls indoor soccer team warms up. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals.

Roberta Zuric is a theatre director born in Vilnius, Lithuania and now based in London - by way of Spain and Germany.

She creates work that is physically and visually playful, politically (big and small) engaged, irreverent, messy, full of heart. It is often interdisciplinary, exploring the synergy and juxtaposition between text, body, architecture, music, and design. Collaboration and play is at the heart of her practice, whether working on new or extant stories and texts.

Roberta's work has been performed at the National Theatre, Almeida theatre, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Soho Playhouse NYC, Pleasance Theatre, Vault Festival, Jackson’s Lane, libraries and community venues around the country, and online.

As an assistant and associate director, she has worked in the West End, Shakespeare’s Globe, Royal Shakespeare Company, Arcola Theatre and Nevill Holt Opera. She has assisted Rachel Bagshaw, Owen Horsley, Adele Thomas, Sean Holmes, Marieke Audsley, and Angus Jackson.

As a transdisciplinary collaborator, Roberta has extensive experience of creative facilitation and education consultation. Learning and pedagogy are ongoing loves of hers, and she works with numerous national and international organisations as a workshop leader and programme creator.

In addition to her directing and facilitator work, she's also co-artistic director of Crow’s Nest Theatre Company who focus on making adventurous new work for children (of all ages!).

Sarah DeLappe’s play The Wolves (Pulitzer Prize finalist; Lortel, Outer Critics Circle nominations for Best Play/Emerging Playwright; Relentless Award, Sky Cooper New American Play Prize; Susan Smith Blackburn and Yale Prize finalist) premiered at The Playwrights Realm, following an engagement with New York Stage and Film, and development with Clubbed Thumb.

Fellowships and developmental support include The MacDowell Colony, The Ground Floor, LCT3 Playwright in Residence, Ars Nova Play Group, Page One Fellowship at The Playwrights Realm, SPACE on Ryder Farm, and Sitka Fellows Program. MFA: Brooklyn College.

Contains themes of abortion, pregnancy, loss of a child, grief, sudden death of a friend and female objectification. Use of explicit language throughout and minor use of blood.

Includes brief references to global human rights issues and historical war crimes including:

  • Child detention centres in USA and Central America

  • The Khmer Rouge regime and Cambodian genocide

  • Torture and sexual humiliation at Abu Ghraib prison (Iraq war)
