About the show

The tale of an impassioned, childless woman living with her husband in rural Spain. Tortured by her incessant longing to conceive a child, Yerma is driven by madness to commit a heinous crime.

Roy graduated from Rose Bruford College in 2011 with a BA (Hons) in Theatre Directing.

He was made Associate Artist at The Red Room in 2011 and in 2014, he was the BBC Theatre Fellow at the Bush Theatre and the Lyric Hammersmith.

Roy went on to spend a year at London’s Royal Court as Trainee Director and was the 19th recipient of the prestigious JMK award. He was Associate Director at the Donmar Warehouse in 2019. He was was Associate Artist at Harts Theatre Company and was lead acting tutor at Young & Talented. Roy is currently a tutor for Open Door.

He was co-Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange Theatre between 2019 & 2023 and was awarded an MBE in 2020.

Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936) is the author of The House of Bernarda Alba, Yerma and Blood Wedding, among many other plays. He also wrote some of the best poetry in Spanish of the 20th century. He was assassinated during the Spanish Civil War.

Jo Clifford is Professor of Theatre and Bill Findlay Fellow of Stage Translation at Queen Margaret's University College Edinburgh, and Associate Playwright of the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland. Her plays include the original works Losing Venice and Light in the Village, and adaptations of Faust and Celestina all published by NHB. 

Contains themes of pregnancy and female objectification. Includes depictions of murder through drowning and references to blood, childbirth, death and sexual assault.  

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.
